Sounds great Sugan. The project uses Maven now for builds, and code is managed by SVN. We are also using Eclipse as the IDE. Do let us know if you have any problems with the setup.

Downloading and installing the software is at least pretty easy. There is also a demo site where the latest release is running. There is a google discussion group you can join and I just set up a google site to cover the work on the cometd-based desktop we are just starting.

Most of the code is in Java. The current Web UI uses JSP. There is also a Swing-based database console program called Browse. The web server we use is Jetty, which these days is even more popular than Jakarta. The new UI will be built on CometD and JQuery on the front-end, JSON for message passing and XSLT on the backend for transforming XML into HTML. Our hope is to create a demo-grade comet desktop by the year end, but we have a long way to go.

Take a quick look over the docs, and let me know if there is something above that you can't find a link to. Do join the google discussion group. Do at least install the product and the tools. Don't be shy about asking for help.

I hope you have lots of time. There is just a whole lot to learn here.

Hi there,

My name is Christopher Lucas, I am 20 years old and live near Pittsburgh,PA.

I have just graduated obtaining my Associates in Science for Computer Programming and was interested in contributing towards this project and hopefully helping in any way that I can. I'm very familiar with Eclipse and Java, which from the looks of this project is the main language used. Some other languages that I've used are HTML, C++, and C#. I've also been using MySQL quite often.

I'm really looking forward to this as a learning experience :)

Christopher,

Glad to have you. Getting started on this project isn't too bad, you just need to download the latest (16.13.0 as I write this) and work through the install (docs are linked to from the main page of this site). Running the software is a bit more interesting, as the UIs tend to be vague complex. You might want to visit the demo site as well. Doing a build requires maven. And if you use Eclipse you will also need the maven plugin.

The hard part is getting an assignment, for though there is lots of work that needs doing, most assignments require a lot of knowledge of internals. Perhaps you could team up with Alex or Barrie?
