This morning Malcolm sent me an email pointing out the interest in Opera and the similarity to the intentions I have for AgileWiki. This got me thinking about the differences.
Opera extended their browser to support content hosting via their own web portal, with the advantage that your content stays on your own machine. But that's not a big advantage without a good system for managing access. And if you just want to hand over your content to anyone, why not host it on some other web site? Still, it is a step towards web3.0.
My goal is to allow anyone to host a full-blown web server on their own computer, which might be a bit more interesting for web developers if not the general public, and to support multiple web portals that can be hosted by anyone with a static IP address. It is a bit more open and flexible, though also a bit more geeky. Note also that with a complete web server (aka Jetty), there are any number of ways to limit access to your content to selected users.
Frankly I am delighted with what Opera has done--they have defined a market which they do not fully address. Lots of opportunity here.
